Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed the secret strategy used to outclass Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday (27/05/17).
Speaking to BBC Sport, Mr Wenger indicated that his players were demoralised after missing a spot in the UEFA champions League next season, but that motivated them to win against the Blues.
“We had an outstanding performance from the first minute onwards. This team has suffered. They’ve united and responded. They showed strength and unity and played spectacular football today.
“I’m proud to have won seven of these cups. I’m proud having done this – winning the championship without losing and winning seven FA Cups,” an elated Wenger stated.
Aaron Ramsey netted a 79th-minute header to earn the Gunners a stunning 2-1 win over double-chasing Chelsea and deliver embattled Wenger a record seventh FA Cup.
Alexis Sanchez’s early opener for Arsenal, allowed to stand despite an apparent handball, was cancelled out by Diego Costa, only for Ramsey to respond immediately with the second FA Cup-winning goal of his career.
According to AFP, Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, who had Victor Moses sent off after he received a second booking for diving, were stopped in their attempt to complete a Premier League and FA Cup Double for the second time.
It meant no glorious farewell for departing skipper John Terry, who will bow out on 717 appearances and 17 major honours after spending the match on the bench.
Chelsea manager Conte:
“I think the first goal was very strange. The first half we didn’t start well, we didn’t have the right approach and we suffered in first 25 minutes. We started to play better in the second half and the red card was decisive.
“There is disappointment for the final result but it can happen and there was a lot of pressure. Victor Moses has been good and played an important season.
“Our season was incredible to win the league in this way, it was great but now it’s important to look forward and to restart”.
The two rivals will meet again in the Community Shield on Sunday, 6 August, before the new season.
