Barcelona sealed the Spanish La Liga top flight title yesterday with a 1-0 away win against Atletico Madrid despite second placed Real Madrid winning 4-1 at Barcelona’s neighbors Espanyol. The 2014-2015 league title was Barcelona’s 23rd league title, a remarkable feat though they are still 9 behind Archrivals Atletico Madrid.
The game itself showed each of the team’s respective strengths as the home side used their brute force and tactical discipline to combat Barcelona’s free scoring, one touch play soccer. Barcelona keeper Claudio Bravo made a few brilliant saves as Atletico looked menacing especially in set pieces. Barcelona struggled to breakthrough a tight Atletico Madrid defense but the first half was relatively uneventful apart from a penalty claim that was pushed away when Juanfran handled the ball from a Neymar diving header as the half ended.
The second half saw more urgency in attack from Barcelona and it eventually yielded results with a 41st La Liga goal for Barcelona this season as he scored neatly in the 65th minute. There were more chances for both sides but the Messi goal was enough for the Catalans as they amassed 3 points to make their league total to 93 points four points past Real Madrid who have 89 points in second place while Atletico is 3rd with 77 points.
