Defending Kenyan champions got their 2nd win of the CECAFA Kagame cup as they thrashed Zanzibar outfit Kikosi Maalum Cha Kuzuia Magendo (KMKM) by 3 goals to one in a pulsating match in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Monday afternoon. The game came less than 3 days after Gor defeated host team Yanga of Tanzania by 2 goals to one in their first group game. KMKM were also on the back of a victory after beating Djibouti’s Telcom on Saturday.
Gor showed their intention as early as the 2nd minute as Rwandese forward Meddie Kagere tapped in a cross from his striking partner Michael Olunga to give Kogalo the lead. KMKM were not going down without a fight and they pushed forward for an equalizer. It did not take long in coming when Matteo Simon scored the equalizer after poor defending by the Gor Mahia from a corner.
Engineering student Michael Olunga was a constant threat as he continued making good efforts on target and his pairing with Kagere ran the KMKM defense rugged and keeping the goal keeper busy.
Gor Head coach Frank Nuttall made a few changes in the push for a second goal replacing Ronald Omino with Eric Ochieng and Godfrey Walusimbi for Enock Agwanda. The breakthrough was finally achieved in the 69th minute as Olunga turned in Abouba Sibomana’s cross for the 2nd goal and his 2nd of the tournament. He was soon to get his third as substitute Agwanda made his coach smile as he assisted Olunga for the third goal with a huge throw in ,a trait which he had replicated a few weeks ago leading to Gor fans’ affectionately calling him ‘teargas launcher’ among other names in praise of his throwing skills!
The result leaves Gor 3 points clear on the top of Group A with 6 points while KMKM are second with 3 points.
