Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed following a fire that gutted down a 61 students capacity dormitory at St Augustine Nyamonye Girls’ Secondary School in Bondo sub-county.
According to the school’s Deputy Principal Dorothy Ogola, the fire was discovered by some of the students at around 6.45 pm on Tuesday when the rest of their colleagues had just finished taking their dinner.
Mrs Ogola stated that students raised alarm before the management through the help of community members rushed to put out the fire in vain since it spread fast.
She told the media that all students’ belongings were reduced to ashes during the fire that engulfed the whole building after the students and members of the public were overwhelmed.
“We want to assure the parents that the students are safe since the fire broke out when students were in the dining hall ahead of their evening preps,” she said.
The Deputy Principal stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been established but they suspect that it could have been as a result of an electric fault.
She stated that officials from the Ministry of Education are expected in the school to be able to assess the damage and help in establishing the real cause of the fire.
Three months ago, the school was among the affected ones in Nyanza in the wake of school fires.
Sources at the institution said that it was closed due student unrest.
The area Director of Education Elisha Omalla said that the school’s administration requested that the students be sent home since there was a lot of tension in the school and no learning was taking place.
