Imenti Central Member of Parliament Gideon Mwiti will be arraigned in court today where he is charged with assault and rape of a 29 year old lady in his private office in Westlands. Mwiti was arrested and locked up at the Kileleshwa police station yesterday awaiting DNA samples he had given to the government chemist to be tested against those collected from the alleged victim. Police said they had finalized investigations and handed over the file to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko.
The doctor who allegedly conducted a forced HIV/AIDs test on the lady was also arrested on Friday by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board and his clinic in Ngara area closed. The doctor has also been charged with operating his clinic illegally. Dr David Mwangi Muchiri of Fig Tree Medical Centre was released on a Sh100,000 bond but will be charged with aiding and abetting the MP’s alleged crimes.
Mwiti had been grilled for the second time last Thursday about the alleged assault and rape after the office of the DPP realized Mwiti’s statement had some gaps.
Representatives from the office of the DPP also visited the home of the raped victim and recorded further statements from her. She said she was forced to take a HIV test before the MP assaulted and raped her in an office next to the MP’s bar in Westlands. The woman’s husband says Mwiti has been trying to reach him seeking to settle the matter privately. He says the MP also has sent several emissaries to talk to him and his wife to seek settlement out of court
The allegations and subsequent media frenzy it created has generated pressure from the civil society, the public as well as other stakeholders calling for action to be taken in the case. The conduct of Members of Parliament continues to raise questions in light of several accusations of graft and sexual impropriety that has slowly continue to come to light.
