A popular Citizen TV news anchor is under fire for interviewing suspects in mega corruption scandals in the country.
Celebrated anchor Jeff Koinange came under criticism on Sunday after a section social media users accused him trying to sanitize corruption suspects through his interviews.
A picture doing rounds on social media shows a cleaning detergent that is branded “JKL shower gel.”
The imaginary product’s tagline is labelled “When corruption persists, just JKL it” which is a reference to his popular JKLive show.
Jeff has in the past (July 2017) interviewed former Devolution Cabinet Secretary and current Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.
During the show, Waiguru conclusively dismissed claims of having played any role in the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal.
Ben Gethi was hosted in December 2015 and indicated that he had earned his money by supplying NYS with fuel and food and was not part of the first NYS scandal.
Most recently on Citizen, Jeff interviewed Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Chairman John Ngumi who is wanted in Tanzania over a Sh600 million bribery scandal relating to a government bond floated in 2012.
One user by the name Muthui Mkenya said, “I will not be surprised if Koinange Jeff hosts the Ruaraka Land Saga criminals.”
Accusing Jeff of providing a stage for corrupt people to undergo a cleansing, another tweep remarked: “A governor went there and was cleansed beyond recognition and came out of the show as a newborn with no blemishes. Jeff will invite Anne Ngirita to the show and perform the same rituals.”
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term in office has been rocked by a series of graft scandals in various ministries, with Kenyan taxpayers having lost billions in stolen public funds.
In 2018, at least six scandals have been unearthed bringing to the fore the extent to which corruption has permeated the highest levels of Government.
