The repeat presidential election will be presided by a new team, all reporting directly to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati.
In a surprise move, Chebukati picked a project team in which he sidestepped all those that NASA leaders had demanded be removed from election management.
The new IEBC team:
Project Coordinator: Mr Marjan Hussein Marjan
Head of Operations: Dr Sidney Namulungu
Head of Logistics: Ms Nancy Kariuki
Head of Training: Mr Bernard Misati Moseti
Head of Legal: Ms Salome Oyugi
Head of ICT: Mr Albert Gogo under the direct supervision of the National Returning Officer.
According to Chebukati, the appointment takes immediate effect and will last for a period of 3 months.
The drastic move came after meetings in which reportedly divided commissioners failed to reach a consensus on reorganising the IEBC secretariat headed by IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba following the Supreme Court verdict.
“The appointment takes immediate effect and will last for a period of three months. As the National Returning Officer, I wish to assure all Kenyans of my commitment to ensure that this fresh presidential election is done in accordance with the Constitution, the relevant laws, and that it reflects the sovereign will of the Kenyan people,” Chebukati said in a statement.
The changes are believed to have been made to raise the credibility of the fresh election and satisfy NASA’s condition for participating in the new showdown.
Raila had earlier protested the October 17 election date and gave new conditions including immediate firing of senior IEBC officials.
He also demanded access to electronic servers to be used by the electoral commission if polls are to be held on that date.
“There will be no election on the 17th unless the specific demands herein are honoured. We demand nothing less than a fully transparent and accountable electoral process. IEBC seems anxious to reach an outcome it desires,” the former Prime Minister ordered.
