A huge fire razed down sections of Kijiji slum in Lang’ata Southlands on Sunday night.
Fire engines rushed to the scene to contain the inferno that was spreading fast.
According to locals, many houses were reduced to ashes in the congested neighbourhood.
Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja said firefighters were deployed to the scene although residents stated that they did not do much.
“There’s no one who can contain the fire, and helpless residents have been left to watch as the inferno brings down houses. Firefighters left the scene when the engines ran out of water,” stated one of the residents.
The fire is said to have started from one of the structures in the area before spreading to other areas.
Police said they could not tell if there were casualties of the fire that broke out at about 9pm.
While addressing the media, Lang’ata OCPD Elijah Mwangi said they were yet to know the cause of the fire but promised to begin investigations immediately.
“We don’t know what caused it. Investigators will have to tell us,” he said.
