Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki survived impeachment on Thursday (22/3/18) a day after after an MP tabled a motion seeking to remove her from office.
The petition filed in Parliament by Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi was withdrawn after series of events to save her career bore fruit.
In a statement to newsrooms, National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale revealed that the Jubilee Party had engaged legislators to allow the petition be dealt with internally by the leadership.
“We have agreed this morning that the matters raised by our colleagues can be resolved internally and we have given the leadership in and out of the house the opportunity to resolve the matter,” Duale affirmed.
Duale said they will address issues raised by the lawmakers on the CS’s conduct together with the Presidency and the Cabinet.
The Garissa Town MP further reminded the MPs that Jubilee Party had serious issues to deal with in healthcare, manufacturing, food security and devolution which he asked them to concentrate on.
“Jubilee Party is the ruling coalition, we have a strong relationship with the Executive whether it is the Cabinet, or the Presidency or Principal Secretaries,” he said.
The motion filed on Wednesday by MP Abdullahi, had 170 signatures from the legislators.
Abdullahi accused CS Kariuki of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
“We are certain that it will go to the floor of the House for debate. For now, the process has begun and we will see it to the end see how it unfolds. It’s a democracy, the outcome we cannot predict. We will not spare any public officer who will not conform to the expectations and the rules of procedure. Parliament will protect Kenyans because we are supposed to protect Kenyans,” Abdullahi said.
The Health CS has been faulted by lawmakers for suspending Kenyatta National Hospital CEO Lily Koros over the brain surgery mix-up incident at the facility.
