Germany players under fire as fans call for their retirement

Germany’s Mesut Ozil is now facing calls to retire from after Joachim Low’s side were bundled out of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Ozil, who started after being dropped by Low against Sweden last week, took a fair share of the blame in the wake of the loss at the Kazan Arena, with football fans from across the globe telling him to retire from football.

Social media exploded after the final whistle as netizens threw jibes at the the Arsenal attacking midfielder following his poor show.

“Ozil was pure trash #GER he need to retire!” said one fan.

“Ozil probably needs to retire from international football,” added another. “He hasn’t done well.”

“Ozil is spent…. he needs to retire from football,” quipped a third.

“They should just force Ozil to retire,” said another.

“Germany deserves to be knocked [out],” stated one supporter. “Retire Ozil now.”

Ozil was not the only Germany international on the receiving end following the shocking World Cup exit on Wednesday.

“Is this the most embarrassing loss in German history?” wrote a disenchanted fan. “Ozil, [Sami] Khedira, [Jerome] Boateng, and [Mario] Gomez should immediately retire. England will beat Sweden and/or Mexico.”

“[Thomas] Muller, Khedira, [Manuel] Neuer, Ozil, Gomez, [Mats] Hummels, Boateng need to all retire,” added another.

While a third said: “Expecting a few big names in the Germany squad to quit/retire from the national team after this debacle! My picks are Neuer, Boateng, Khedira, Gomez and Ozil with Loew getting the sack!”

Germany crashed out of the showdown after a stoppage-time VAR-assisted goal from Younggwon Kim and a late second by Son Heungmin earned South Korea a famous 2-0 win.

It is the first time since 1938 that West Germany or the unified Germany team has not advanced beyond the first stage of the tournament.
