DP Ruto Silent as Joshua Sang Considers Odinga ICC offer

Sang

Radio journalist Joshua Arap Sang is set to formally write to the former Premier Raila Odinga, to testify in his defence at the International Criminal Court. This emerges just a few days after the CORD leader stated that he was willing to testify on behalf of Deputy President William Ruto and clarified that the Orange Democratic Movement was not in any way involved in the planning of the 2007/2008 post election fracas.

Odinga says that the evidence incriminating William Ruto was provided by his close allies and named Nancy Gitau, Michael Gichangi and Mutea Iringo as some of the alleged Ruto “fixers”. Deputy President William Ruto has however remained silent and has not made any response to Raila Odinga’s offer. Reports say that Sang’s lawyer Philemon Koech has stated that a decision on whether they will formally approach Raila will be reached next week.

Raila says that despite his offer to help the Deputy President, his close allies are still playing double politics. “Ever since I made that offer, I have been publicly and privately told by persons claiming to stand with Hon. William Ruto that my testimony is not needed. In fact, Hon. Ruto and his legal team have been publicly beseeched by the same jubilee politicians challenging me today to testify not to accept any help from me,” said Raila.

Just before the 2013, Sang had strongly linked Odinga to the people who planned for him and Ruto to go to the ICC. “We are away in a foreign land with my brother [Ruto] because of allegations made against us. The truth must be told. In my opinion, the people who masterminded and planned to have me and my brother taken to the Hague did not include Raila Odinga,” Sang said then.

Lawyers say Raila’s testimony is likely to help the Ruto/Sang case by buttressing claim that they were fixed by their PNU opponents after the bungled 2007 presidential polls.

“Mr. Ruto was, at that time, a prime target of those who stole the elections,” Raila said.

Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda accuses Sang of placing his prime time radio show ‘Lene Emet’ at Ruto’s disposal before and during the PEV. Ruto was an ODM Pentagon Member then.

Months ago, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, a close ally of the Deputy President said, “Raila is an international leader and a national leader. It has been said that he has sacrificed a lot for this country, he should also sacrifice for the Deputy President for the sake of national unity,”

“As a lawyer, I would advise the DP to ask Raila to testify in his case,” he added.
