Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea were emphatically demolished by three goals to none by West Bromwich Albion in a game that many thought was a dead rubber as Chelsea have already won the league and West Bromwich Albion have already fulfilled their objective of staying up in the league.
The Champions started the game in a rather complacent manner, being content to just knock the ball about. There was a marked lack of sharpness and one would speculate that since they had already won the title there was basically nothing to play for .However it was West Bromwich who took the early initiative in the 9th minute as in form Burundian born English striker Saido Berahino unleashed a wondrous shot from the edge of the box which nestled itself in the bottom right corner out of the reach of the outstretched Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal.
Then came the moment of controversy as hot tempered Chelsea forward Diego Costa had an altercation with members of the West Bromwich defense as they were marking him during a set play. There was a huge scuffle as the referee tried to calm the situation down but the surprise came when Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas who was quite a distance from the gathering rather stupidly decided to kick the ball right into the middle of the scuffle. His insolence earned him an instant red card as his actions seemed to further aggravate the situation. Eventually it died down and the first half ended.
The second half also started on a dramatic note as Berahino lunged into the box but was fouled by Chelsea captain John Terry. He was awarded a penalty which he dispatched coolly past the unlucky Courtois. The game continued as 10 man Chelsea held large swathes of possession but could not break down their numerically superior opponents. Winger Chris Brunt put the final nail in the coffin in the 60th minute after scoring a cracking shot which caught Courtois off-guard at the near post. The win takes West Bromwich to 44 points for the season in 13th place while Chelsea remain at the top with 84 points.
Elsewhere, Memphis Depay arrived at the Carrington training grounds in Manchester for a medical ahead of his proposed transfer move from Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven. The highly rated youngster was officially given the number 19 jersey and is not expected to play against Hull City this weekend as the deal will only be officially closed this summer.
