A seismic shock gripped the sporting world as Athletic Bilbao cruised to a 4-0 lead in the two legged Spanish Super Cup 2015 against Barcelona in Bilbao on Friday night. The shock defeat came just a few days after Barcelona triumphed over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup in Georgia by a 5-4 margin.
Barcelona coach Luis Enrique rotated his squad giving starting positions to Adriano and Thomas Vermalean while UEFA Cup match winner Pedro was rewarded with a start alongside Messi and Suarez. The game was turned in the 13th minute when Marc Andre Ter Stegen headed away a clearance straight into Mikel San Jose who volleyed it home from the unbelievable distance of 48 meters. Barcelona held onto most of the possession but Bilbao were looking increasingly confident with their 1 goal lead.
The game came alive again in the second half as Barcelona tried to equalize but was denied by Bilbao keeper. On the other half Sergi Roberto lost the ball in midfield leading to a swift Bilbao attack which led to Bilbao’s second, a header by veteran striker Aritz Aduriz. Then in the 62nd minute Aduriz got his brace after a cross brought a defensive scramble in the Barcelona box brought the ball straight to his feet and shot it past the flailing arms of Marc Andre Ter Stegen. Aduriz then completed his hat trick a few minutes later after he converted a penalty after a Dani Alves foul.
Elsewhere, Manchester United continued their 100 percent league run with a 1-0 win against Aston Villa at Villa Park. Manchester United yet again put in another unconvincing performance against a Villa side that was full of confidence. The winning goal was scored by Belgian winger Adnan Januzaj in the first half who had replaced Ashley Young in the starting lineup. However, it was not a good game for Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney who does not seem to have hit good form.
