The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has finally released the September salary for teachers just a few hours before Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) holds its annual general meeting on Wednesday.
Last month, President Uhuru Kenyatta asked the Teachers Service Commission to consider releasing the money the commission withheld for the month of September, after a meeting with the two teachers’ unions at State House.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have indicted the Teachers Service Commission of stepping back on the President’s directive.
Many students in public school were affected by the teachers’ strike which consumed the whole month of September, hindering syllabus coverage. The teachers were on strike to pile pressure on the government to implement the 50 to 60 % wage increment ordered by the Supreme Court. Later, the court had ordered the teachers to resume duties but the teachers under their unions remained adamant and defied this order.
